News of Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence
November 27-28 2021, the III National Moot Court Competition on EU Law took place under the auspices of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Academic coordinator of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence - Prof. O. Shnyrkov, Vice-Rector for Education (International Affairs) of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Expert of the Centre- Prof. K. Smyrnova , Members of the Ukrainian Parliament – V. Halaichuk (First Deputy Chairperson of the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on Ukraine’s Integration into the European Union) and M. Mezentseva (Deputy Chairperson of Verkhovna Rada on Ukraine’s Integration into the European Union, Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Approximation of Ukrainian Legislation to EU Legislation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine), General director of governmental office on European integration and NATO – N. Forsyuk and co-founder of the Youth Forum "Youth Now" – Y. Dziuba.
20 teams registered to participate in the Competition, 6 of them took part in oral rounds, including representatives of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics, Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (Kharkiv) and Odesa State University of Internal Affairs.
The team of judges was headed by the Vice-Rector for Education (International Affairs) of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Expert of the Centre- Prof. K. Smyrnova . In addition, the panel of judges included academic staff of the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv - Assoc. Prof. I. Vlyalko, Assoc. Prof. O. Sviatun (Expert on EU law of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence) and Assoc. Prof. A. Fedorova; Ivan Franko National University of Lviv - Prof. M. Mykiyevych and Assoc. Prof. I. Bratsuk; Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University (Kharkiv) - Prof. T. Komarova and Assoc. Prof. O. Trahniuk, as well as a practicing lawyer at “Integrities” Law Firm - M. Boychuk and Chief Legal Adviser of the Secretariat of the Deputy Faction in the Office of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine B.Veselovsky.
The plot of the case to be decided by the participants concerned the freedom to provide services in another EU Member State for EU and third-country nationals, as well as the fight against discrimination in employment on the grounds of gender and third-country nationality.
The team "Lex victoriae" which consisted of representatives of the Institute of International Relations (Bohdana Marchenko) and the Institute of Law (Valentina Sorokivska) of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv won the victory in the final competition.
Experts of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence - Prof. K.Smyrnova (Head of the EU Law Section) and Assoc. Prof. O.V. Sviatun (Expert of EU law) participated in the organization and holding of the III National Moot Court Competition on EU Law.
The objective of the event: to promote practical knowledge of the EU law issues among law students; to analyse current legal issues, to enhance their advocacy, legal research and writing skills in EU law.
Training content: simulating a court hearing in which participants analyse a problem, research the relevant provisions of the EU law, prepare written submissions, and present oral argument.
The event was supported by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme as part of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Project «Advancing European Studies in Ukraine: Interdisciplinary Approach» (№ 611625-EPP-1-2019-1-UA-EPPJMO-CoE).
