Meeting with Dainius Žalimas, Member of the European Parliament
On 8 April 2026, a meeting was held at the Institute of International Relations and International Studies with Dainius Žalimas, Member of the European Parliament. The topic of discussion was ‘The Role of the European Parliament in European Integration and Support for Ukraine’.
During the meeting, key aspects of the European Union’s development were presented, in particular the stages of its enlargement (1952–2013) and the UK’s withdrawal in 2020.
Dainius Žalimas outlined the objectives of the European Union:
- promoting peace, values and the well-being of citizens
- ensuring an area of freedom, security and justice
- the functioning of the internal market and sustainable development
- the formation of an economic and monetary union (the euro)
- supporting peace, security and sustainable development worldwide
The Speaker paid particular attention to Ukraine’s place in the European political landscape.
Dainius Žalimas is known for his consistent support for Ukraine and his active stance on the defence of European values.

The speech also touched upon the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought — one of the European Parliament’s key awards, which has been honouring human rights defenders since 1988.
In particular, the following laureates were mentioned:
- 2023 — Gina Mahsa Amini and the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement (Iran)
- 2024 — the democratic opposition in Venezuela
- 2025 — Andrzej Poczobut (Belarus) and Mzia Amaglobeli (Georgia)
