International Business

According to the educational program “International Business”, the Institute trains international economists with professional knowledge of two foreign languages, who within the acquired knowledge and skills are able to:

  • perform analytical and managerial functions of the appropriate level in the activities of central and local executive bodies in the field of international business cooperation;
  • make independent, honest and responsible decisions in the field of international business process management in the activities of Ukrainian and foreign companies;
  • engage in research and consulting activities in the field of international business.  


The need for specialists in the field of international business is companies engaged in foreign economic activity, banks and other financial institutions, government agencies, embassies and trade missions of Ukraine abroad, and the media, covering issues of international economic activity. In the process of specialization, a special role belongs to the formation of students' creative style of entrepreneurial thinking, and education of leadership qualities that are able to actively act in the field of international business. Such a specialist must be able to make effective and professional decisions on international business, banking, risk management and insurance, taxation, international investment, intellectual property rights and more.

 

Professional differences in educational programs International Economic Relations and International Business

International business and International economic relations are two related educational programs that have a common object of teaching, namely - external to the national economy economic processes, factors and phenomena.

The main difference between the two educational programs is the different subjects of teaching and, accordingly, the different competencies (knowledge and skills) of graduates:      

  1. For the speciality and, accordingly, the educational program "International Economic Relations" the subject area of ​​teaching is the macro level of external economic processes, factors and phenomena, which is determined by such basic concepts as the world economy, interstate economic relations, foreign trade balance, competitiveness in the world economy, the state of world commodity markets, the impact on the national economy of foreign direct investment, the country's participation in global and regional integration processes, relations with international economic organizations, foreign trade policy and state regulation of foreign economic activity, etc.       
  2. For the educational program "International Business" subject realm of teaching - a micro (corporate) level of external economic processes, factors and events, defined by such basic concepts as foreign trade enterprises, companies (firms) organization and equipment of foreign trade companies, marketing and competitor's strategy of the corporation in the foreign market, corporate management in international companies: strategic, financial, risk management, personnel, cross-cultural, creative, change management, etc .; feasibility study (business planning) of an international investment project, sectoral features of international business projects, etc.             
    Thus, the competencies of graduates of the educational program " International Business" include a different set of disciplines, the acquisition of relevant knowledge and applied skills in the field of international business at the corporate level.    

Different subject areas of the two educational programs determine a different set of disciplines (or a different number of hours in the disciplines) and, accordingly, different competencies of graduates of bachelor's and master's programs.

  • selection of a specialized block of disciplines from the curriculum and obtaining an average score not lower than "75" based on the results of all disciplines that are included in it;
  • receiving a score of at least 75 points on the qualifying exam.


Conditions for awarding the professional qualification "translation specialist":

  • passing the production (translation) practice, provided by the curriculum, with a score of at least 75 points;
  • receiving at the qualifying examination for the translation of a score of not less than 75 points.

As part of the educational program for 2014 - driven by the English-language master's program «International management and marketing» (International Management and Marketing). English master's program is eighteen months the program for full-time students. The content of the program includes courses in which students study global business processes and company management in a competitive market.

  • passing of industrial (undergraduate) practice;

Conditions for awarding the professional qualification "translator":

  • availability of the qualification "Translation Specialist";
  • obtaining a score of at least 75 points on the qualifying exam "Theory and Practice of Translation".
     

The educational process is provided by teachers, first of all, of the Department of International Business, World Economy and International Economic Relations, International Finance, Department of Foreign Languages, other departments of the Institute of International Relations and faculties and institutes of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

In addition, employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, other government agencies of Ukraine, international organizations, Ukrainian and foreign business structures, and foreign teachers of leading educational institutions of other countries are invited to give lectures, seminars or workshops.

Today, the Department of International Business has 16 teachers. Among them are 5 doctors of economics, professors; 11 candidates of economic sciences, associate professors and assistants.

Graduates of the educational program can hold primary positions: manager of foreign economic activity, manager of asset management of international companies, manager of international investment projects, economist-marketer, economist of foreign economic planning, economist of financial work in international markets, columnist of foreign economic affairs, economist of contract and claims works, lecturer (assistant) of a higher educational institution, specialist-analyst in the study of international commodity markets, a consultant on foreign economic issues, economic adviser, translator, attaché, diplomatic agent, translator from a foreign language.

 

Our graduates work:

  • in representative offices of transnational corporations, joint ventures and enterprises with foreign capital;
  • in international economic organizations;
  • in domestic and foreign corporations carrying out international business projects;
  • in higher educational institutions, academic institutions of Ukraine and foreign countries;
  • in-line ministries and other departmental structures.

 

In order for students to acquire primary practical skills, the curriculum provides for the following types of practice:

1. Regional Studies (3.0)

This course examines the geographical location, climatic conditions, mineral resources, ethno-confessional composition of the population, features of cultural and historical development, political and legal systems, state systems, economic complexes, foreign policies of Asia, Africa and Latin America, CIS countries, Europe and North America, as well as Ukraine's relations with them.

 

2. Economics (3.0)

The purpose of the course "Economics" is the formation of students' competencies in the economic field of knowledge; the development of the ability to apply the received knowledge in professional activity in the conditions of globalization of world economy, skills of the analysis and estimation of quickly changing conjuncture of the markets for the purpose of acceptance of optimum administrative decisions; the acquisition of the practice of economic thinking and orientation in the world of market relations. This course is the theoretical basis for the study of sectoral economies, and the formation of students' views on economic policy.

 

3. Economy and Foreign Economic Relations of Ukraine (3.0)

The discipline "Economy and Foreign Economic Relations of Ukraine" involves the study of the main features and socio-economic conditions of management during the transition period at the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Ukraine. Particular attention is paid to the formation of a modern economic system in Ukraine: objective necessity, content, essence, systemic transformations, contradictions and antagonisms.

 

4. International Relations and World Politics (4.0)

The course is devoted to the study of the evolution of world politics and international relations in the period from 1945 to 1979, the late XX – early XXI century, the study of basic theories, doctrines and concepts of world politics, general international issues, regional specifics, provisions of international law, fundamental political and international legal research on world politics and international relations.

 

5. Introduction to the Specialty (2.0)

The discipline involves the following tasks: to reveal the nature, and essence of modern international business as a phenomenon of social life and economic activity based on modern theoretical and methodological approaches, as an economic category and independent science, to show the stages of its historical development, its environment, types and kinds, to analyze the functional and institutional structure of the international business, its patterns, trends and problems of its development in the context of globalization. At the same time, the strategic task is to form a clear, logically consistent and structured system of knowledge and ideas about students’ future training.

 

6. Public International Law (3.0)

The course is aimed at studying traditional topics: the concept and characteristics of international law; its sources, system, principles and norms. For the professional development of students, topics that allow moving to the analysis of specific international legal problems: the interaction between international law and domestic law; institution of international legal personality, recognition in international law, and succession of states, are considered.

 

7. International Business (4.0)

The course provides an in-depth study of the types and forms of modern international business. Special attention is paid to the organization and management of international business, the technological policy of transnational corporations, and the mechanism of diplomatic support for the interests of Ukrainian businesses in foreign markets.

 

8. Ukrainian and Foreign Culture (3.0)

The course examines the attractions of spiritual and material culture, created over the centuries and captured in various forms. They are considered on the historical vertical as a holistic phenomenon, as well as on regional grounds, taking into account the relationship with the cultural achievements of other peoples, as no ethnic group, people, or nation can develop in isolation, outside the general historical process.

 

9. Global Environmental Issues in International Business (3.0)

Under the influence of modern globalization processes, scientific and technological progress increases human impact on the environment, which leads to arising of global environmental problems. This course involves the study of the main features, principles, methods, tools and approaches to planning and organizing environmentally-oriented management of enterprise development.

 

10. International Economic Relations (3.0)

This course provides coverage of theoretical and practical aspects of the development of modern international economic relations, and methods of research of the object within the discipline; special attention is paid to the consideration and analysis of theories of international trade and modern forms of world economic relations between countries in the context of economic globalization.

 

11. Philosophy (4.0)

The discipline is aimed at providing knowledge of philosophy as a set of views on the world as a whole and one’s attitude to this world, in the understanding of ontological, epistemological, axiological and social problems of life.

 

12. International information (4.0)

The discipline "International Information" includes knowledge of the system of international relations in the context of globalization of communication; specifics, trends and prospects of international information policy, analysis of the impact of ICT on international systems and global development, research and forecasting of the international community’s problems in the field of information and communication, clarifying the impact of Ukraine's information development on political and economic aspects of integration into the global information space.

The discipline includes basic theoretical knowledge about the formation and interaction of organizations in cross-border activities, it involves the study of forms and types of business complicated by a foreign element and reflects the objective processes of doing business at the level of optimizing the use of organizational resources.

The course provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge of the basics of international marketing, familiarization with marketing tools used in solving marketing problems in the process of international activities, and the basics of market research using marketing communications in national and international markets.

The scientific course is adapted to the program of training international specialists with an emphasis on the study of the diplomatic aspect of the history of Ukraine. The object of the proposed discipline is to reproduce and evaluate the efforts of domestic diplomacy to ensure favourable conditions for the comprehensive development of the nation-state and analysis of the institutions of the diplomatic service in different situations and at different times.

 

22. Mathematics in Economics (3.0)

The course includes basic methods and models of linear and vector algebra, analytical geometry, mathematical analysis, differential calculus of functions of one and many variables, integral calculus, differential equations and their practical applications in international economics, finance, management, administration and business.

 

23. Modern Information Systems and Technologies (3,0)

The course involves the study of modern information systems and technologies that can be used by future professionals in the field of international relations.  The course outlines the conceptual, informational, hardware and software basics of work on modern personal computers using the necessary means of presentation, processing and retrieval of data used in the training of specialists in the field of modern international relations.

 

24. History of Economic Doctrines and Economic Development (4.0)

Knowledge and awareness of the content and patterns of evolution of world economic thought contribute to a deeper understanding of current economic problems of the past and present.  Mastering the course raises the theoretical level and expands the worldview of students, helps them to master the culture and techniques of economic thinking, and instils skills of creative comprehension of complex socio-economic problems.

 

25. Economics of the Firm (3.0)

The main tasks of the discipline are the study of modern personnel policy, replication and use of fixed assets, formation and determination of financial and production investments efficiency, features of enterprise development based on scientific, technical and organizational progress, determination of work motivation, quality and competitiveness of products, ways of conducting efficient activities in conditions of the market economy;  development of a creative approach to reasoning and making administrative decisions, characteristics of the structure and directions of activity of the enterprise, development and realization of the plan of its development, the analysis and generalization of results of industrial and economic, commercial and financial activity, processing of suggestions to increase the efficiency of management measures and control over their implementation when the situation in the market environment changes.

 

26. Micro- and Macroeconomic Foundations of International Business (3.0)

The course involves the study of the principles of behaviour of economic entities - households and firms - in different market conditions, the study of basic macroeconomic models, basic modern macroeconomic approaches to economic analysis, macroeconomic policy (fiscal, monetary), and tools for analyzing micro- and macroeconomic relations.

 

27. Theory of Statistics (3.0)

The discipline involves a systematic study of statistical methods for studying the patterns of development of socio-economic phenomena and processes, the formation of theoretical and methodological foundations of statistical management and the development of management decisions based on the results of statistical analysis.

 

28. Settlements and Payments in International Business (3.0)

The course provides a presentation of the theory and practice of payment methods and calculations.  Particular attention is paid to the characteristics of payment instruments and instruments ensuring the fulfilment of contractual obligations.  Another important topic studied is the issue of guarantees in the implementation of international trade contracts.  An overview of the main methods of financing export-import operations in modern conditions is given.

 

29. Marketing Research and Benchmarking in International Business (3.0)

The course is devoted to theoretical and methodological, technological and substantive aspects of planning, organizing and conducting marketing research, qualitative analysis and forecasting of the market situation of the enterprise or organization and further use of research results in marketing.

The discipline is devoted to the study of the practice of the negotiation process.  Situational techniques are combined with dialogue exercises.  The practical orientation of the discipline is based on a combination of theoretical concepts of the negotiation process with real constructive examples of bilateral, multilateral and international commercial negotiations.

The course involves expanding the professional horizons of thinking and raising the level of professional culture of the specialist;  use of features of cross-cultural communications in professional activity, studying of problems of the international dialogue in the context of the development of a professional culture of the expert, the analysis of national specificity of business culture in its connection with organizational culture;  formation of evaluation criteria and ways to achieve success in the business sphere and study the features of cross-cultural interaction techniques, formation of practical skills in business cultures and business communication, taking into account national traditions and mentality.

This discipline involves the study of the management process of large functioning business structures in various sectors of the economy at the international level.

The subject of the discipline is the relationship between the participants of business communications, as well as a system of factors that affect its effectiveness.

 

1.5.  Diplomatic Support of International Business (3.0)

The course involves studying the basics of diplomatic support of international business in the context of the implementation of foreign trade policy of the state; the impact of the system of diplomatic support of international business on information and analytical activities, financial and credit and investment spheres; ensuring national economic security using the methods of diplomatic support of the international business.

2.1.  Brand Management in International Business (3.0)

The purpose of the discipline is studying of the tools and mechanisms of brand development and management in modern international business, knowledge formation on the development and positioning of brands, research current trends in brand development in international and Ukrainian markets, form students' knowledge of principles, technologies and tools of brand-communications.  The main objectives of the discipline are studying the economic essence and role of the brand in international business;  studying the main methods of brand valuation based on the analysis of elements of its capital;  analysis of different approaches to development, and brand positioning;  research of basic approaches to brand management;  consideration of the peculiarities of brand management in various spheres of activity of economic entities;  identification of patterns and internal trends in the development of national and international brands.

 

2.2. Neuromarketing in International Business (3.0)

The course is devoted to the study of neuromarketing technologies used in international business by explaining consumer behaviour and helping to understand their needs, desires and motives.

Particular attention is paid to the nature and relevance of neuromarketing, methods of connecting with customers and developing brand loyalty, studying marketing tools that replace traditional logos and advertising, and sensory branding: the use of emotions to maximize sales.

 

2.3. Marketing Management (5.0)

The purpose of the discipline is the acquisition by future specialists of scientific foundations and practical skills in developing a marketing policy for the activities of business entities.

The main tasks of the discipline include the formation of new economic thinking based on the principles of the modern concept of marketing, which corresponds to the current state of market development, a long-term vision of the development of priority areas of the national economy, identifying existing consumer needs, meeting them, as well as ensuring the implementation of the enterprise's missions in the market.

 

2.4. Digital and Social Media Marketing 5.0

The purpose of the discipline is the creation of a theoretical and practical basis for researching the market of information services in the digital space.

The main tasks of the discipline include the formation of students' knowledge about the development of digital technologies, marketing tools on the Internet, global informatization of society and economic processes.

3.1. Accounting and Analysis of Foreign Economic Activity (4.0)

The course is aimed at presenting the basic theories of international accounting standards and the procedure for presenting financial statements in accordance with international financial reporting standards.

 

3.2. Methods for Making Management Decisions in International Business (3.0)

The academic discipline which is devoted to the study of methods of analysis of modern international economic relations involves the study of the rules for the application of methodology, techniques and tools of economic and mathematical modelling in theoretical research. The course aims to provide students with basic information about the current state and logic of decision theory. The systematic presentation of various mathematical, economic, and statistical methods, the method of expert assessments and the provision of information on their application in the practice of making managerial decisions are the features of the discipline.

The course is aimed at studying the modern theory and practice of pricing, analyzing the patterns of formation of structures of domestic and foreign trade prices within world trade, and pricing methods at the micro (firms and organizations) and macroeconomic (national and international) levels, the features of constructing the most important economic indices predominantly used in modern world practice.

 

Pricing Strategies in International Business (3.0)

The purpose of the discipline is the formation of a complex of knowledge among students about the essence, principles, methods and strategies of pricing for products (works, services) of an enterprise (organization), about the methods of making the informed choice depending on the parameters of the external environment.

The purpose of the discipline is to train highly qualified specialists who can perform organizational, analytical, and research work in the field of international accounting and financial reporting standards.
