Country Studies is a new training direction at the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Training of experts in Country Studies is carried out on the basis of the Chair of International Regional Studies which was established in 1995. Until 2003, the Chair had been titled the Chair of Comparative Political Science and Regional Studies. In 2003, the Chair was renamed the Chair of Country Studies. On 13 April 2018, the Chair received its modern name – the Chair of International Regional Studies.

In 2012, the Institute of International Relations began training specialists in ‘Country Studies’; respectively, the Chair acquired the status of the graduate chair. On 1 September 2016, the staff of the Chair started training students at the second (master's) level of higher education.

About educational programmes

The primary purpose of the educational programme “Country Studies (American Studies, European Studies and Oriental Studies)” of the first (bachelor's) level of higher education, the educational and scientific programme “Regional Studios” and the educational and professional programme “International Political Regionalism” of the second (master's) level of higher education is a preparation of highly qualified international specialists with regional specialization, who gain specialized knowledge of the peculiarities of the historical, political, economic development of the country and region. Students learn foreign languages, that will determine their regional specialization (English or Spanish - for American and European Studies, Chinese or Arabic - for Oriental Studies; as a second foreign language students learn - English, French, German, Arabic, Polish, and Chinese).

The educational process at the educational programmes is carried out in the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv on the basis of the Chair of International Regional Studies. The history of the Chair origins in 1960, when the Chair of humanities was created within the preparatory faculty for foreign nationals of the Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University. In 1995, the Chair was renamed the Chair of Comparative Political Science and Regional Studies. In 2003, the Chair was renamed the Chair of Country Studies. On 13 April 2018, the Chair received its modern name – the Chair of International Regional Studies.

 

Bachelor’s graduates receive:

  • educational qualification: Bachelor of International Relations, Public Communications and Regional Studies
  • professional qualification: Specialist in Country Studies and Specialist in Translation

 

Bachelor's graduates have the academic right to enter one of two master's degree programmes:

 

Regional Studies

Its graduates receive:

  • educational qualification: Master of International Relations, Public Communications and Regional Studies
  • professional qualification: International political scientist, Expert on Social and Political Development of Countries / Regions, Interpreter of a Foreign Language, Junior Scientific Officer on Regional Studies

 

International Political Regionalism

Its graduates receive:

  • educational qualification: Master of International Relations, Public Communications and Regional Studies
  • professional qualification: International political scientist, Expert on Social and Political Development of Countries / Regions

 

The training of the international relations specialists who obtain the Bachelor’s degree is implemented according to the following selective specialized blocks:

  • Countries of the post-Soviet Area
  • European and North American Countries
  • Asian, African and Oceanian Countries
  • Latin American Countries
  • Oriental Studies
  • American Studies


The training of the international relations specialists who obtain the Master’s degree in the educational and scientific programme “Regional Studies” is implemented according to the following selective specialized blocks:

  • Asian and African Studies
  • European and American Studies
  • Countries / Regions in the World in the Era of Globalization
  • Regional Studies of the Baltic – Black Sea Area Countries


The training of the international relations specialists who obtain the Master’s degree at the educational and professional programme “International and Political Regionalism” is carried out according to the following selective specialized blocks:

  • Regional Studies of the post-Soviet Countries
  • European and American Studies
  • Asian and African Studies
  • Latin American Studies


The educational process is provided by educators of the Chair of International Regional studies as well as by representatives from other chairs of the Institute of International Relations such as the International Relations and Foreign Policy Chair, International Organizations and Diplomatic Service Chair, International Law Chair, Private International Law Chair, Chair of Comparative and European Law, Chair of World Economy and International Economic Relations, Chair of International Finance, Chair of International Information, Chair of International Media Communication and Communication Technologies, Chair of International Business, Chair of Foreign Languages.

Furthermore, a lot of the famous Ukrainian and foreign practitioners, members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and other Ministries, scholars from the National Science Academy of Ukraine, international organizations and businesses, and educators from leading foreign educational institutions are involved in an academic curriculum in order to hold lectures, seminars and master classes.

Today, the Chair of International Regional Studies has 11 professors, in particular, 2 doctors of science, professors; 5 PhDs, associate professors; 3 PhDs, assistant professors; 1 assistant professor.

 

The students can acquire primary practical skills, as the curriculum provides for the following types of internship:

  • Field Internship (professional translation) (Bachelor’s degree),
  • Field Internship (pre-diploma) (Bachelor’s degree),
  • Research and Field (Pre-Diploma) Internship (Master’s degree).

The bases of internships for our students are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine (territorial and functional departments), the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko the National University of Kyiv (Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations), the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, international organizations, national and foreign business structures.

Graduates of the educational programmes can obtain primary positions: in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, in the departments of international cooperation and European integration of ministries and institutions, in central and regional executive bodies, or a teacher (assistant) in higher education institutions, of an expert and of an analyst in political and social issues of the development of a country / a region, of a translator, of an attaché, of a diplomatic agent, of a diplomatic courier, etc.

 

Our graduates work:

  • in central and regional authorities and administrations of Ukraine and other countries in the world;
  • in representative offices of multinational corporations, joint ventures and enterprises with foreign capital;
  • in international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations;
  • in business structures of various spheres of the economy of Ukraine and foreign countries;
  • in higher education institutions, academic institutions of Ukraine and foreign countries.
