International Law
Students of this department gain theoretical knowledge of international legal regulation of interstate relations, and practical skills necessary for participation in the activities of government agencies, and public organizations in the field of interstate relations and foreign economic activities.
The teaching of professionally-oriented disciplines at the Department of International Law is provided by three chairs:

The main purpose of training specialists in educational programs of the «International Law» department is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills in the theory and practice of public international law, private international law, and European law. Students study one foreign language, and learning a second foreign language is offered as an optional choice.
The educational process in the department is carried out at the Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv on the basis of the Chair of International Law, the Chair of Private International Law and the Chair of Comparative and European Law.
Training of bachelors of international law/specialists in international law is carried out in the following specializations (within the educational-professional program "International Law"):
- International public law
- International private law
- European law
- International economic and environmental law
Training in this educational program lasts 4 years. Graduates of this bachelor's program receive the educational qualification "Bachelor of International Law", as well as professional qualification (subject to certain requirements) – "specialist in international law" and "specialist in translation". The requirements for getting the professional qualification of "specialist in international law" are the following: passing all types of practices that are provided by the curriculum; selecting a specialized block of disciplines from the curriculum and getting an average score not lower than "75" based on the results of all disciplines that are included in it; receiving a score of at least 75 points on the qualifying exam. The requirements for getting the professional qualification of "specialist in translation" are to get a score of at least 75 points at the qualifying examination.
In addition, for the first time in the history of the Institute of International Relations, an English bachelor's program for international students "International Law" was opened and successfully implemented. Training under this program lasts 4 years, and upon its successful completion, graduates receive the educational qualification "Bachelor of International Law" and the professional qualification "Specialist in International Law".
The training of masters of international law/international lawyers is carried out according to the following educational programs:
- International law has the following specializations:
- International Protection of Human Rights
- International Legal Support of the State's Foreign Policy
- International Environmental and Natural Resource Law
- International Private Law
- European Law
- International Business Law
- European Competition Law
- International Public Law (without additional qualification of the translator);
- Private International Law (without additional qualification of the translator);
- International Litigation (English Master's Program);
- Legal Trade Regulation (English Master's Program);
- European Business Law (English Master's Program).
The educational process is provided by teachers of, first of all, the Chair of International Law, the Chair of Private International Law, the Chair of Comparative and European Law, and other departments of the Institute of International Relations.
In addition, employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other ministries and departments of Ukraine, employees of international organizations, Ukrainian and foreign business structures, and teachers of leading educational institutions of other countries are invited to give lectures, seminars or workshops.
In order for students to acquire primary practical skills, the curriculum provides for the following types of practice:
- Internship (professional translation) (educational level "Bachelor"),
- Internship (undergraduate) (educational level "Bachelor"),
- Research and production practice (educational level "Master").
The bases of internships for our students are the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. the infrastructure of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and private law firms.
Graduates of educational programs in the speciality 293 International Law may hold the following primary positions: expert, an expert in international law, legal counsel, assistant lawyer, assistant judge, assistant notary, court clerk, bailiff, international law adviser, political commentator, a public consultant on political issues (in parties and public organizations), an expert on socio-political issues, a lecturer of higher education, a translator, an attaché, a diplomatic agent, a diplomatic courier, an international lawyer.
Our graduates work: in public authorities, domestic and foreign law firms, international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, international judicial institutions, higher education institutions, and academic institutions in Ukraine and foreign countries.
