History of the Department

The Department of Private International Law was established in 1992. The establishment of the first University Scientific and Pedagogical Center on Private International Law (PIL) in Ukraine and the countries of the former USSR was the logical result of 150 years of studying problems and teaching PIL at the University.

Professors of international law M. Rennenkampf, V. Nezabitovskyi, and O. Eickelman made a significant contribution to the development of PIL.

The real prerequisites for the establishment of the PIL Department were created only in the late 1980s, when, first of foremost, there emerged a cohort of young scientists in the PIL in a country. The historical mission of training such specialists was carried out by professors Hennadyi Matvieiev and his son Yuri, Ihor Lukashuk, and associate professor Halyna Dmytriieva. It can be said that it was they who founded the Ukrainian scientific school of private international law.

Thus, the roots of the PIL are in the ancient history of the University and the country as a whole. The first Department Chair (1992-1995) was Professor, Doctor of Juridical Sciences Kostiantyn Sandrovskyi. From 1995 to 2014, the Department was headed by Professor, Doctor of Juridical Sciences, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Honoured Lawyer of Ukraine Anatoly Dovhert. Since 2014, the Department is headed by Candidate of Juridical Sciences, Associate Professor Victor Kalakura.

Over the years, the Department scientists have made a significant contribution to the development of the modern science of private international law and the improvement of Ukrainian legislation through active participation in national and international law-making. Internships of the teaching staff in the best foreign educational institutions and participation in international conferences contributed to the growth of the department's authority as a leading centre for the development of private international law not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

Now the Department staff includes:

  • 4 professors, Doctors of Juridical Sciences (Anatolii Dovhert, Oleksandr Biriukov, Viktor Muraviov, Oleksandr Vyhovskyi);
  • 2 associate professors, Doctors of Juridical Sciences (Hennadii Tsirat, Yuliia Cherniak);
  • 4 associate professors, Candidates of Juridical Sciences (Viktor Kalakura, Serhii Koziakov, Oleksandr Seriohin, Bohdan Kryvolapov);
  • 3 assistants, Candidates of Juridical Sciences (Mykola Lazarenko, Yevhen Popko, Andrii Smolii).

The Department provides lectures and practical classes in the academic disciplines of "Private International Law", "Comparative Civil Law", "International Civil Procedure", "International Commercial Arbitration" and other disciplines related to the legal regulation of foreign economic activity.

The department has introduced the newest forms of the educational process, including case studies together with the specialists of leading law companies ("Baker & McKenzie", "Vasyl Kysil & Partners", "DLA Piper", "Iliashev & Partners" and others).

The Department invites specialists from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Administration of the President of Ukraine, Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, the Supreme Court of Ukraine as well as lawyers to read special courses.
