International scientific relations

The Department is proud of its strong scientific relations with the Monash University (Australia), the University of Salzburg (Austria), the University of Western Ontario (Canada), the Adolfo Ibáñez University and the University of Chile (Chile), the City University of Hong Kong (China), the University of Los Andes (Colombia), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), the University of Helsinki (Finland), University of Genoa and the University of Trento (Italy), the University of Alcalá and the University of Valencia (Spain), the University of Seven Hills (Turkey), University of East Anglia (UK) and others. In the summer of 2005, the Department was represented at the Conference of the International Consortium for Global Legal Education (Istanbul, Turkey).

 

PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC EVENTS

Lecturers actively participate in international conferences, which contribute to the growth of the Department's authority as a leading centre of international private law development not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

Professor A. Dovhert has participated in international conferences and seminars in the USA, Canada, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Russia, Italy and other countries. Since 1995 he has been participating in diplomatic sessions of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

Professor O. Biriukov has participated in and spoken at more than 160 conferences, including international ones: in the USA (San Francisco and Washington), Italy, Dubai, etc. He has also participated in the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

O.Vyhovskyi took part in the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Legal Science as a Basis for Legal Support of Innovative Development of Russia" (Moscow: Lomonosov Moscow State University, November 28-29, 2011) and the International Conference on Corporate Governance "Modern firm management" (Utrecht, Netherlands: Utrecht University, December 11-13, 2008).

Yu. Cherniak and B.Kryvolapov took part in the II International Scientific Conference (Kutafinski readings) "State and Law: challenges of the XXI century" (Moscow, 2010) and in the IV International Scientific Conference (Kutafinski readings) "State and Law: challenges of our time" (Moscow, 2012).

 

INTERNSHIP ABROAD

The lecturers of the Department constantly undergo internships in the best foreign educational institutions, which promotes emulating positive experience and increasing the professional level.

O.Biriukov carried out scientific research at the Samford University's Cumberland School of Law (Alabama, USA, 1994-95 and in 1997); at The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) (Rome, Italy, 1996); he is a Fulbright Scholar (New York University Law School, 2000 - 2001).

B.Kucher and B.Kryvolapov, Associate Professors since 1998, participated in teaching academic disciplines at the International Academy "Plato" (Bulgaria). B.Kryvolapov had an internship at the George Washington University (USA) in 2004-2005 and at the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam on the Erasmus Mundus program in 2010.

O. Seriohin studied at The University of Iowa College of Law (USA) from 2001-2002.

O. Vyhovskyi had an internship at the University of London (United Kingdom) from 2006-2007.

Yu. Cherniak had an internship at the Academy of European Law (Germany, Trier) in the summer of 2010.

 

COMMON INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

The cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh (USA) that was launched in 2002 fruitfully continues today. The main goal of the project (head - Associate Professor O. Seriohin) is the development and updating of working curricula for private international law and comparative civil law, advanced training of lecturers of the Department of Private International Law through medium-term internships at the University Law School of Pittsburgh, organization of academic exchanges of faculty for reading courses of lectures on topical issues of private international law for students of the Department of International Law at the Institute and the School of Law of the University of Pittsburgh, holding conferences and round tables on topical issues of private law, strengthening the material and technical base of the Institute.

The students were given lectures by professors Ronald Brenn, Mark Walter, Douglas Branson and Linda Teshbuck. Prof. Maina Breeze conducted practical classes in the special course "Pre-trial dispute resolution". For the first time, professors Teresa Brostoff and Ann Sinsheimer started a special course "English for Lawyers", which is well-known in the USA. As a result, 17 students completed the special course and received their diplomas.

Due to the project and with the help of law firms from Ukraine: "Konnov, Sazanovskyi & Partners", "Serhiy Koziakov & Partners", "Salcom", "Vasil Kysil & Partners" the student team for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna (Austria) is being prepared on a permanent basis.

In May 2004, the Center of Private Law of the Department of Private International Law (Director - Associate Professor O.Seriohin) was solemnly opened. The purpose of this Department is the development of private law in Ukraine through research in the field of private law of Ukraine and other countries, the organization of conferences and round tables, the creation of a legal clinic with private law, joint work with publishing house "Istyna" on a series of "Private Law", publication of the "Yearbook of Private International Law", expansion of international cooperation of the Institute with leading foreign universities, development of distance courses on private law. Due to the modern equipment, the newest library fund, and legal search systems such as League, WestLaw, and LexisNexis, the Center for Private Law created all conditions for scientific research by the staff of the Institute and the best students involved in the projects of the Center.
