International scientific relations
The Department is proud of its strong scientific relations with the Monash University (Australia), the University of Salzburg (Austria), the University of Western Ontario (Canada), the Adolfo Ibáñez University and the University of Chile (Chile), the City University of Hong Kong (China), the University of Los Andes (Colombia), the University of Copenhagen (Denmark), the University of Helsinki (Finland), University of Genoa and the University of Trento (Italy), the University of Alcalá and the University of Valencia (Spain), the University of Seven Hills (Turkey), University of East Anglia (UK) and others. In the summer of 2005, the Department was represented at the Conference of the International Consortium for Global Legal Education (Istanbul, Turkey).
PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC EVENTS
Lecturers actively participate in international conferences, which contribute to the growth of the Department's authority as a leading centre of international private law development not only in Ukraine but also abroad.
Professor A. Dovhert has participated in international conferences and seminars in the USA, Canada, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Russia, Italy and other countries. Since 1995 he has been participating in diplomatic sessions of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
During 2023-2024, Professor Oleksandr M. Biriukov participated and spoke at more than ten international public events on bankruptcy, in particular, the CERIL Extraordinary Assembly of Conferees, which took place on December 11, 2023 (Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands); Conference оn Preventive Restructuring іn Europe. The PRD 2019 at Five: from Policy to Practice», which took place on 17-18 April 2024 (Vilnius, Lithuania);
The World Bank Group will be convening the 2024 Insolvency and Creditor/Debtor Regimes Task Force (ICR Task Force), which took place on May 10, 2024 (Washington, DC, USA).
Professor Oleksandr M. Biriukov is involved in other forms of international relations: an anonymous review of the article draft (for the Journal "European Insolvency and Restructuring Journal."); at the invitation of the Columbia Basin Badger Club Discussion Club (Tri-City, Washington, USA) acted as a guest speaker spoke on Russia's aggression against Ukraine (BADGER FORUM: A Postcard from Kyiv. Live from Ukraine's Capitol (April 27, 2023).
Professor Oleksandr M. Biriukov is also a member of a number of international institutions and agencies, in particular: Member of The World Bank Insolvency and Creditor/Debtor Regimes Task Force (ICR Task Force) (since 2011); Conferee of the Conference on European Restructuring and Insolvency Law (CERIL) (since 2020); Correspondent, International Institute for the Unification of Private Law – UNIDROIT (since 2021).
In particular, during 2023, Professor A. Dovgert took part in the following international conferences: International Scientific and Practical Conference, “Judicial Cooperation in Civil Matters in Polish-Ukrainian Relations,” held on February 23, 2023 (Leon Kozminski Academy, Warsaw); International Scientific and Practical Conference “Scientific Heritage of Professor Yuriy Hryhorovych Basin and the Development of Civil Law”, held on March 31, 2023 (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty).
Professor O. Biriukov has participated in and spoken at more than 160 conferences, including international ones: in the USA (San Francisco and Washington), Italy, Dubai, etc. He has also participated in the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
Judge of the Supreme Court, Associate Professor Yuliya V. Chernyak was designated as a judge of the International Hague Network of judges for Ukraine.
From 29 to January 30, 2024, Associate Professor Yu. Chernyak took part in the 22nd Annual Meeting of the Members of the European Judicial Network in civil and commercial matters (Brussels, Belgium).
Associate Professor Yu. Chernyak also took part in the Eighth Meeting of the Special Commission on the Practical Operation of the 1980 Child Abduction Convention and the 1996 Child Protection Convention, organized by the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH (the Hague, the Netherlands), which took place from 10 to October 17, 2023, and in the International Conference «Thirty Years of the Polish-Ukrainian Agreement of 1993 on Legal Aid: Evaluation of Effectiveness in Civil and Commercial Matters» (Chair of International Private and Trade Law, University of Warsaw), which took place on 10 March 2023.
Associate Professor Bohdan M. Kryvolapov participated in the international conference "Judicial Cooperation in Civil Matters in Polish-Ukrainian Relationships," organized by the Leon Kozminski Academy (Warsaw) in collaboration with the EU Project in Ukraine "Pravo-Justice." (February 23, 2024).
Associate Professor B. Kryvolapov also participated in the international conference: «Private international law and national adjudication” organized by the Supreme Court of Ukraine in collaboration with the Ukrainian Association of International Law and British Institute of International and Comparative Law (April 24, 2024) and the international workshop: “The University as a Battleground –The Dilemmas of Ukrainian Higher Education in a Global Context” organized by the Institute for Advanced Study at CEU (Budapest), in cooperation with the Virtual Ukraine Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS) (May 9, 2024).
During 2023-2024, Associate Professor Yevhen V. Popko co-organized and participated in 2 international scientific and practical conferences: the International conference, organized by Ukrainian Association of International Law, Supreme Court of Ukraine, British Institute of International and Comparative Law devoted to Private International Law in National Adjudication (April 24, 2023) and scientific and practical international conference "Special Tribunal. Reintegration of Crimea and all the so-called territories. War crimes. Compensation mechanism", organized with the support of the Office of the President of Ukraine (December 15, 2023).
Assistant Professor Viktoriia O. Khomenko is a member of the Ukrainian IFAP UNESCO National Committee and the IFAP UNESCO working group on information literacy (since 2024).
INTERNSHIP ABROAD
The lecturers of the Department constantly undergo internships in the best foreign educational institutions, which promotes emulating positive experience and increasing the professional level.
O.Biriukov carried out scientific research at the Samford University's Cumberland School of Law (Alabama, USA, 1994-95 and in 1997); at The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT) (Rome, Italy, 1996); he is a Fulbright Scholar (New York University Law School, 2000 - 2001).
B.Kryvolapov, Associate Professor since 1998, participated in teaching academic disciplines at the International Academy "Plato" (Bulgaria). B.Kryvolapov had an internship at the George Washington University (USA) in 2004-2005 and at the Rotterdam Institute of Law and Economics of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam on the Erasmus Mundus program in 2010.
O. Seriohin studied at The University of Iowa College of Law (USA) from 2001-2002.
O. Vyhovskyi had an internship at the University of London (United Kingdom) from 2006-2007.
Yu. Cherniak had an internship at the Academy of European Law (Germany, Trier) in the summer of 2010.
COMMON INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
The cooperation with the University of Pittsburgh (USA) that was launched in 2002 fruitfully continues today. The main goal of the project (head - Associate Professor O. Seriohin) is the development and updating of working curricula for private international law and comparative civil law, advanced training of lecturers of the Department of Private International Law through medium-term internships at the University Law School of Pittsburgh, organization of academic exchanges of faculty for reading courses of lectures on topical issues of private international law for students of the Department of International Law at the Institute and the School of Law of the University of Pittsburgh, holding conferences and round tables on topical issues of private law, strengthening the material and technical base of the Institute.
The students were given lectures by professors Ronald Brenn, Mark Walter, Douglas Branson and Linda Teshbuck. Prof. Maina Breeze conducted practical classes in the special course "Pre-trial dispute resolution". For the first time, professors Teresa Brostoff and Ann Sinsheimer started a special course "English for Lawyers", which is well-known in the USA. As a result, 17 students completed the special course and received their diplomas.
Due to the project and with the help of law firms from Ukraine: "Konnov, Sazanovskyi & Partners", "Serhiy Koziakov & Partners", "Salcom", "Vasil Kysil & Partners" the student team for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna (Austria) is being prepared on a permanent basis.
