Meeting of students with Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the Rights of the Child

On February 26, 2026, students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations welcomed the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the Rights of the Child, Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir.

The central topic of the discussion was the protection of children’s rights in Ukraine, in particular the issue of illegally deported Ukrainian children.

In her address, the Special Representative outlined the key challenges in this area, emphasized the need to consolidate international efforts, and highlighted the importance of effective cooperation between international organizations and national institutions to ensure the return of children, safeguard their rights, and support their further integration.

Thordis Kolbrun Reykfjord Gylfadottir is a former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland, currently a Member of Parliament of Iceland, and an experienced stateswoman and diplomat.

Ms. Gylfadottir has extensive experience in international relations and human rights advocacy.

The meeting was held in the format of an open dialogue and provided a platform for professional exchange of views.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions about:

  • the protection of children’s rights in European countries;
  • international mechanisms for returning Ukrainian children from the Russian Federation;
  • the role of NATO in ensuring security and stability in the region;
  • recent UN resolutions related to the protection of human rights;
  • Iceland’s foreign policy and its experience in international cooperation.

The event became an important platform for deepening students’ knowledge, enhancing their understanding of contemporary international processes, and strengthening dialogue between youth and representatives of international institutions.
