The textbook, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Educational and Research Institute of International Relations of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, thoroughly covers the fundamental, historical, legal and theoretical-methodological topics of the course ‘Comparative Law’, comparative history of state and law of Ukraine and other countries, as well as historical sources, practical tasks and didactic material on the basis of comparative analysis.

Current trends in the development of national states, international organisations and the world community in general necessitate a thorough comparative analysis of the state and legal development of Ukraine and foreign countries, their interdependence and mutual influence, and the patterns of evolution of institutional and contractual mechanisms. Ukrainian statehood has more than a thousand years of continuity, and its evolution has been in line with the general European and world history. The history of Ukrainian statehood is one of the important attributes of a modern state, its sovereignty and identity.

A thorough study and synthesis of the centuries-old experience of national state-building is of paramount importance both for the self-identity of every Ukrainian and for the consolidation of the Ukrainian people for the sake of developing a strong Ukraine. The study of the history of Ukrainian statehood is of great theoretical and practical importance, and is a prerequisite for the restoration and preservation of the national memory of the
of the Ukrainian people, consolidation and development of the Ukrainian nation, its historical consciousness and culture.

In the modern Ukrainian state, considerable attention is paid to training highly qualified lawyers capable of continuing the traditions of Ukrainian state-building. And the continuation of these traditions is impossible without in-depth knowledge of the history of the state and law of Ukraine and other countries - a true, objective and reliable history.

This textbook is, in fact, the first of its kind in Ukraine. It is intended for future international lawyers, teachers, consultants and all those who seek to obtain a modern, qualified legal education.
