Since 1944, the department has been recognized in Ukraine by the official diplomatic leadership, leaders of international and scientific staff in this field and political science of international relations. The work of the department is based on the research schools of international relations and world politics, signed by the prominent Ukrainian scientist and diplomat Professor H.M. Tsvetkov. The Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy was established on October 18, 1944, as the Department of International Relations. It got its modern name in 1994. Its first initiator in 1944 was Prof. O.K.Kasymenko. Since then our department was run by the leading Ukrainian specialists in International Relations: Zhebokrytskyi (1952-56), V.A. Tarasenko (1956-61), P.P.Udovychenko (1961-69), H.M. Tsvetkov (1969-89), M.M. Bilousov (1989-1992), L.O. Leshchenko (1992-93), L.F. Haidukov (1998-2001), Volodymyr A. Manzhola (1994-1998), (2001-2021). The head of the department now is PhD (Political Studies), Associate Professor Victor Y. Konstantynov.

Currently, there are 7 Doctors of Science, Professors (V.A.Manzhola, S.P. Halaka, V.Yu.Krushynskyi, O.A.Koppel, O.S.Parkhomchuk, H.M.Perepelitsia, O.A.Bordilovska), 11 candidates of science, associate professors (S.V. Andrushchenko, M.S.Kamenetskyi, M.H.Kapitonenko, V.Yu.Konstantynov, M.A.Mironova, I.O.Minhazutdinov, S.A.Subotin, N.M Vesela, O.L.Khylko, K.Yu. Denysenko, S.O Makovskyi, V.B. Dalskyi). The department regularly involves foreign lecturers and leading Ukrainian figures from the private and public sectors in the teaching process.

The presentation of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for the cycle of textbooks "Ukraine in world politics" in 2012 to the collective of its lecturers was the recognition of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy as one of the leading scientific and methodological centre in the field of international relations.

The teaching staff of the department attended fellowship programmes at foreign universities and scientific institutions: Harvard University, Berkeley University, Monterey Institute of International Studies (USA), French Institute of International Relations, Institute of Political Science, Paris-Sorbonne University, University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas, Nancy, The Foundation for Strategic Studies(France), The Royal Institute of International Studies, The International Institute for Strategic Studies, London School of Economics (UK), York and Ottawa Universities (Canada); Diplomatic Academy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the PRC, NATO Defense College (Italy), Swedish Defense College; University of Warsaw, Polish Institute of International Relations, The Institute of International Relations, The University of Wrocław (Poland), The University of Zagreb (Republic of Croatia), The University of Belgrade (Republic of Serbia), Jawaharlal Nehru University (India) etc.
