"ASEAN Development Prospects: Opportunities for Ukraine in War Conditions"

On December 1, 2023, students had a wonderful opportunity to attend a lecture by His Excellency Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Republic of Indonesia, Representative of Ukraine to ASEAN Mr. Vasyl GAMYANIN on the topic "Prospects for the development of ASEAN: opportunities for Ukraine in a war."

Working in the format of a Zoom conference, the participants of the meeting, organized by the Center for ASEAN Studies, had an excellent opportunity not only to listen to the lecture of Mr. Ambassador, but also to communicate with him, asking the current questions.   

Welcoming the participants of the event, Deputy Director for Scientific and Pedagogical Work of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations Anton NANAVOV thanked Mr. Gamyanin for supporting cooperation with the ASEAN Research Center and the enthusiasm of the representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Indonesia, with whom they are developing cooperation between our state and the countries of the Asia-Pacific Region, including in the educational sphere.

Vasyl HAMYANIN, starting the lecture, outlined the key features of the process of creation, evolution and current development of ASEAN, procedural aspects of the functioning of this organization and the specifics of its activities in Southeast Asia.

"This is the most diverse union of states that exists today, but all ASEAN countries are guided by the general principles of mutual respect and cooperation," said Mr. Ambassador.

Today, according to him, ASEAN member states have rather high rates of development, because democracy dominates the vast majority of them and relations with external actors are constantly being established, based on a wide multi-format partnership with the countries of the world.

In this vein, Mr. Gamyanin stressed the importance of continuous deepening of cooperation between Ukraine and ASEAN, in particular, the importance of Ukraine's becoming an ASEAN partner, which opens up a number of prospects for the Ukrainian side in the process of promoting its achievements and experience in Southeast Asia.

Therefore, educational cooperation, according to Mr. Ambassador, should also become one of the leading areas of cooperation between Ukraine and the ASEAN member states, not only due to the involvement in cooperation and the development of international projects of scientific and pedagogical workers and teachers, but also wide student circles. "This is especially important in the difficult time of the Russian-Ukrainian war," Vasily Gamyanin emphasized.

Upon completion of the lecture panel, during the meeting there was also an interactive session in the "question - answer" format, which covered both the theoretical aspects of the development of regional cooperation in the APR and the practical opportunities for the work of Ukrainian business, representatives of the spheres of culture, education, information, etc., in the ASEAN member states. In this context, Vasily Gamyanin emphasized the importance of strengthening Ukraine's positions in the Asia-Pacific region in the face of a powerful propaganda war and open information pressure from the Russian Federation, because all Ukrainians in all regions of the world should resist this.
