April 8, 2024, Mykola Kapitonenko, associate professor of the Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy, commented for Espreso TV on Ukraine’s perspectives to reclaim nuclear status, explaining why it is impossible for Ukraine to restore its nuclear potential.

"Ukraine has got rid of nuclear weapons under common international pressure. We had no other alternative. This was the common position of the United States, Russia and other nuclear countries, which wanted to slow down the process of nuclear proliferation at any cost. It was important for them that Ukraine get rid of nuclear weapons and join the treaty on the non-proliferation of such weapons. Unfortunately, due to the fact that today the circumstances have changed, this decision cannot be reversed," Kapitonenko explained.
