Guest lecture by Professor Charles Cockell from the University of Edinburgh
The Institute of International Relations hosted a guest lecture by Professor Charles Cockell from the University of Edinburgh, one of the leading experts in astrobiology and planetary sciences.
The topic of the lecture was: The Scientific, Technical and Social Potential of Planetary Sciences.
Simultaneous interpretation for the lecture was provided by International Economic Relations students Kateryna Lomazei, Mariia Kucheruk, and Kateryna Burliai, alongside International Business students Kateryna Samarina and Polina Karpenko.
The translation support was coordinated by Oleksandr Moiseiovych Hon, Professor at the IIR Department of Foreign Languages.
For our students, this was an excellent opportunity to work with a native English speaker, master specialized scientific vocabulary, and gain practical experience of simultaneous interpretation during an international academic event.
This serves as an example of interdisciplinary learning that combines international expertise, English-language communication, and professional translation practice.
The lecture covered the origin of life, the search for potentially habitable worlds, the exploration of Mars and exoplanets, as well as the role of space exploration in developing new technologies on Earth.
The speaker paid special attention to the fact that space exploration today is a field of active international cooperation. Space research unites nations, universities, and research centers from all over the globe, creating new opportunities for partnership, knowledge exchange, and collaborative scientific projects.
The lecture also featured a discussion on the development prospects of astrobiological research in Ukraine and international scientific cooperation, including the establishment of the Astrobiology Center at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Such meetings offer students a great opportunity to get acquainted with cutting-edge global research and join discussions on science and technology that will shape the future of humanity.

Для наших студентів це стало чудовою можливістю попрацювати з носієм англійської мови, опанувати спеціалізовану наукову лексику та отримати практичний досвід синхронного перекладу під час міжнародного академічного заходу.
Це приклад міждисциплінарного навчання, що поєднує міжнародну експертизу, англомовну комунікацію та професійну перекладацьку практику.
Під час лекції йшлося про походження життя, пошук потенційно придатних для життя світів, дослідження Марса та екзопланет, а також роль космічних досліджень у створенні нових технологій на Землі.
Окрему увагу спікер приділив тому, що сьогодні освоєння космосу є сферою активної міжнародної співпраці. Космічні дослідження об’єднують держави, університети та наукові центри з усього світу, створюючи нові можливості для партнерства, обміну знаннями та спільних наукових проєктів.
Під час лекції також обговорили перспективи розвитку астробіологічних досліджень в Україні та міжнародної наукової співпраці, зокрема створення Центру астробіології на базі КНУ імені Тараса Шевченка Київський національний університет імені Тараса Шевченка.
