Meeting of students of the Institute of International Relations with Oleksandr Vodyannikov, judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine

зустріч

On 13 October 2025, students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations met with Oleksandr Vodyannikov, a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine and a graduate of our Institute's international law programme.

The topic of the meeting, "The Constitutional Court as a Court of International Law," served as the basis for an interesting and meaningful conversation about the place of constitutional justice in the global legal space.

During the event, participants discussed a number of important issues:

  • Can a national constitutional court be considered a court of international law?
  • How is international law applied in constitutional decisions — and can these decisions themselves become a source of international law?
  • When and why do courts refer to international law, and international institutions to national practice?
  • From dialogue to conflict and back: how does mistrust between higher courts and international judicial bodies arise and disappear?
  • Constitutional courts in the "Messinian Strait": what happens when international courts themselves disagree on approaches and decisions?

The lively interest and insightful questions from students deepened the discussion and allowed us to explore the interaction between national and international law in a broader and more multidimensional context. Thank you for your active participation and interest!

The meeting was organised by the IIR and the NGO "UA Experts".
