Results of the competition ‘Ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Implications and Challenges’

On 5 December, the results of the competition organised by the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Educational and Research Institute of International Relations, and the Leonid Kuchma Presidential Foundation ‘Ukraine’ on the topic ‘Ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Consequences and Challenges’ in the speciality ‘International Law’ were announced.
More than 20 participants wrote research papers on the topics:
- Foreign Experience of Implementation of the Rome Statute by States Parties to the International Criminal Court: Theory and Practice;
- Implementation of the provisions of the Rome Statute by Ukraine;
- Protection of the rights of servicemen and veterans: main problems and prospects for their solution.
The winner of the competition is Nikita Kardash, a 3rd year student at the Kyiv National University of Trade and Economics. His work on the topic ‘Protection of the Rights of Servicemen and Veterans: Main Problems and Prospects for Their Solution’ was distinguished by its high scientific level and extraordinary personal story.

In the first days of the full-scale invasion, Nikita stood up to defend the Kyiv region, and after graduating from school he chose to study International Law to continue his fight for justice. Using the legal tools he already has, he aims to ensure the protection of the rights of his fellow soldiers.
They took second place:
- Anastasiia Naida and Viktoriia Nakorchevska, students of the Educational and Research Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, co-authored a paper on ‘Protection of the Rights of Servicemen and Veterans: Key Problems and Prospects for Their Solution’.
- Kateryna Hryniuk, student of the Western Ukrainian National University

Bronze medalists:
Vladyslav Spivak, Yelyzaveta-Susanna Mokretsova and Oleksandr Lyubchych. All of them continue to work on important topics related to the prosecution of war criminals of the aggressor country.

The winners of the competition received cash prizes from the Leonid Kuchma Presidential Foundation ‘Ukraine’ to encourage their activities. The common goal is to support young people who want to change Ukraine through knowledge and legal mechanisms.
We believe that these talented students will become a driving force in ensuring justice at the national and international levels. Their work today is the foundation for our common future.
