Research

The department is one of the recognized research centers for the study of the world economy and international economic relations in Ukraine and Europe.

During decades on the basis of the Department following research schools were formed:

University Research School "Methodology of World Economy and International Economic Relations Research" (scientific supervisor: Professor O.I. Shnyrkov).

Two research schools of the Department:

"European Union in the Global Economic Environment" (headed by Prof. O.I. Shnyrkov) and "Development of Global Economic Issues of the Present" (headed by Prof. A.S. Filipenko).

Since 1977, 130 candidates and 33 doctoral dissertations have been prepared and successfully defended at the Department. Since 2000, 44 monographs, 64 textbooks and manuals, and more than 700 scientific articles have been prepared, including more than 44 published in Scopus and WoS journals.

During 2020-2024, the faculty of the department worked on three scientific topics:

  • "Theory and Mechanisms of Development of International Integration Processes at the Beginning of the 21st Century," scientific supervisor Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Shnyrkov O.I. (2016-2025)
  • Research within the framework of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence (Erasmus+), scientific supervisor Doctor of Economic Sciences., Professor Shnyrkov O.I. (2020-2023)
  • "International Mechanisms for Ensuring Strategic Resources to Enhance Ukraine's Defense Capability," scientific supervisor Doctor of Economic Sciences., Professor Reznikova N.V. (2023-2025)

In 2024, students of the Department were involved in the university-wide project "KNU’s Pilot Project COUL ‘United Expertise: Tackling Ukraine’s Wartime Challenges Through Interdisciplinary Solutions’" (co-organized by Ph.D., Associate Professor Liudmyla Shvorak).

In 2024, Daryna Varenyk, a third-year student of International Economic Relations, achieved 3rd place in the overall ranking of Завтра.UA competition organized by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation. The theme of her work was "Analysis of digital transformation processes as the substantiation of the 'Fast State' strategy for Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction." The academic supervisor for this project t- Ph.D., Associate Professor Liudmyla Shvorak.

The main tasks of the Department in guaranteeing high-quality scientific work for 2021-2025 are:

  • ensuring the active participation of students, graduate students and teachers of the Department in researching the development of the world economy and international economic relations,
  • participating in competitions of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, financing projects of basic and applied res (in 2021 2 applications were submitted),
  • maintaining the practice of annual publication of the collective Departmental monograph,
  • increasing the number of publications of scientific articles by each teacher (at least 2 annually) in professional national and foreign publications, including Scopus and WoS journals,
  • holding on the basis of the Department The Annual All-Ukrainian Scientific Conference on topical issues of international economic relations, participation of teachers, students, and graduate students in other national and foreign scientific conferences,
  • continuing scientific research on the problems of EU economic development within the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence,
  • involving teachers for expert work in public and private structures of Ukraine, international organizations, including using the capabilities of modern information technologies, online services and social networks,
  • maintaining high performance in training Doctors of Philosophy and Doctors of Sciences at the Department,
  • ensuring the establishment and assistance in the activities of the new specialized doctoral council in the speciality through participating in the council of 8 Doctors of Science and teachers of the Department.
