Research

The Chair continues to operate as the main centre of the European Law and Comparative Law School. In addition to teaching directly, the academic staff of the Chair of Comparative and European Law are noted for their active research activities related to the study of theoretical issues of the development of contemporary international, European and comparative law. They also participate in activities of international research groups regarding the approximation of Ukrainian legislation to the legislative provisions of the European Union and the Council of Europe. The result of their scientific activity is the publication of monographs, textbooks, manuals, articles and papers at international conferences.

The academic staff of the Chair are members of the editorial boards of professional legal periodicals: Bilas I.H. - Member of the Editorial Board of the International Scientific Professional Journal "Право України (Rule of Law)"; member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal "Наше право (Our Law)"; member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal " Право U.a (Law U.a)"; Fedorova A.L. - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the professional scientific journal "Український часопис міжнародного права (Ukrainian Journal of International Law)".

In 2023 Head of the department, Professor Bilas I.H. was included to the editorial board of scientific international journals: - The Ukrainian Quarterly. A Journal of Ukrainian and International Affairs, U.S.A. and AD ALTA. Journal of interdisciplinary research, which is part of the Web of Science scientometric database.

Since September 2022 Professor Shpakovych O.M. is a member of the scientific reviewers of the International Journal of Law and Society (IJLS) - which is indexed in the following scientific and metric databases: ResearchBib, CNKI SCHOLAR, CrossRef, WorldCat, Eurasian Scientific Journal Index.

The Ukrainian Analytical and Educational Centre of European and Comparative Law has been established and is actively functioning at the Сhair of Comparative and European Law.

All academics of the Chair have the scientific degree. During 2018 - 2023, 1 academic defended thesis for the obtaining of the scientific degree of Doctor of Sciences (Popko V.V.). In total, during 2018 - 2023, the Chair prepared and defended 7 thesis for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor and Candidate of Sciences, of which 2 were doctoral and 6 candidate's theses, and 4 theses for obtaining the scientific degree of Doctor of Philosophy. In general, the effectiveness of the training of post-graduate students and doctoral students at the Chair in 2018-2023 is 100%. 

Academics of the Chair and staff of the Research department of the Institute periodically prepare legal opinions and answers to requests of state institutions, in particular the Supreme Court of Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The researches prepared by the staff of the Chair were applied within the framework of the negotiation process for signing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU.

The main components of the educational process provided by the Chair are the supervision of the scientific activity of students, which is reflected in the supervision of coursework, qualifying master's theses, conducting scientific and production, production (pre-diploma) practice, supervision of the scientific work of graduate students, etc.

The textbook provides research on a wide range of issues of legal regulation of the process of economic, political and legal integration within the European Union.

The historical stages of the formation and development of European Union law, the legal nature of the EU and its legal system, the activities of the Union institutions are covered. It provides legal analysis of the sources of European Union law and acts of integration bodies. Particular attention is paid to the human rights protection system within the European Union. The features of European citizenship are established and an analysis of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights is provided.

The legal mechanisms of the functioning of the fundamental freedoms of the EU internal market, the directions of activity and the economic policies of the EU are covered. The basics of legal regulation of financial and economic relations, the securities market, public procurement, antitrust, competition, corporate, transport, labour, social legislation of the EU and types of EU activity in other areas are revealed.

The legal base of the external relations of the European Union is covered. The legal mechanisms for implementing the EU's common foreign and security policy, the EU's common trade policy, and the EU's Schengen acquis are explored. Special section is focused on legal regulation of Ukraine's relations with the European Union and approximation of law.

Abstracts of the scientific conference "International and European law in the modern conditions of military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine: problems and prospects of civil society development and the formation of a new world security architecture".

International law students take an active part in national and international scientific competitions. So, in particular, in 2021, the 3rd-year student of the specialty "International Law" Kushnov Maksym became the winner (3rd place) at the All-Ukrainian competition of student scientific works of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine in the specialty "International Law" (scientific supervisor - Doctor of Law, Prof. Shpakovych. O.M.).

From March 1 to May 1, 2020, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, ES Institute of International Relations, the Chair of Comparative and European Law, the Leonid Kuchma Presidential Foundation "Ukraine" held a competition for the best scientific paper in the academic discipline "Law of International Organizations" among students Bachelor's degree, Master's degree at the Institute of International Relations, specialty "International Law" OR. The winners were Shalamberidze Maria– 1st prize, Khodakivska Daryna– 2nd prize, Penkovska Sofia (2nd year) – 2nd prize, Kagramanyan David– 3rd prize.

From June 1 to September 1, 2021, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, ES Institute of International Relations, the Chair of Comparative and European Law, , the Leonid Kuchma Presidential Foundation "Ukraine" on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine held a competition for the best scientific paper in the specialty " International law" among students of higher educational institutions of Ukraine. Among the winners are students of the ES Institute of International Relations Otroshchenko Denys - 2nd prize, Ducheva Maria - 2nd prize.

In April 2023, another competition for the best scientific work in the specialty "International Law" among students of higher educational institutions of Ukraine was announced. The approximate date of the competition is April - September 2023.

Together with the Council of Europe Project in Ukraine "Internal Displacement in Ukraine: Development of Durable Solutions", a distance course on international legal standards of internal displacement and the legislation and practice of Ukraine was introduced for master's students with simulation of a case at the European Court of Human Rights and issuing of certificates about successful completion of the course.

From April to November 2023, another competition for the best scientific work on the topic: "International legal consequences of the russian federation's armed aggression against Ukraine" in the specialty "International Law" for students of Ukrainian higher educational institutions was held. The competition winners were: Prystupa Alina (EaS IIR KNU), Hora Larisa (National Aviation University), Olena Reshetnikova (Bohdan Khmelnytskyi State Pedagogical University of Melitopol), and Alison Harvey (Anglia University (Cambridge)). Incentive prizes were presented to Hryhoriy Turshukov (EaS IIR KNU) and Anna Kryzhanivska EaS IIR KNU. 

October 12, 2023 in the premises of the EaS Institute of International Relations of the Kyiv National University, a public scientific and practical discussion of problematic issues regarding conflict-related sexual violence took place, taking into account the Balkan experience in this area. The event was organized by the Office of the Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, NGO "UA Experts" within the framework of the social and legal project "Response & Prevention" in partnership with the Department of Comparative and European Law of the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with the support of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA PA).

October 23, 2023, the academics of the Chair of Comparative and European Law of the EaS Institute of International Relations Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv took part in the international scientific colloquium "Principles of good public administration and guarantees of their application in the practice of Ukraine and the Czech Republiс", organized together with the Faculty of Law Palacky University in Olomouc (the Czech Republic) as a part of project: Intensive research and pedagogical cooperation (academic staff and students), support of publication activity and qualification growth of academic staff Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, CODE project (COoperation and Development).The colloquium was held in a hybrid format (online and face-to-face at the Faculty of Law in Olomouc).

On December 1-2, 2023, an oral round of the National Judicial Competitions in EU Law was held at the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations, organized by the Department of Comparative and European Law of the IIR, IIR Moot-Court Society and the Legal Department of the RS IIR. The oral round was traditionally preceded by a written one, during which the participants had to write memoranda on the part of the plaintiff and the defendant according to the plot of the competition. After a thorough evaluation of the submitted works, the team of judges identified 8 teams that went to the next stage: United in Spirit (IIR KNU), Minions of Themis (IIR KNU), Genti (IIR KNU), Fortuna Advat (SUTE), Movit Centum (CHNU named after Yuri Fedkovich), Ladies in Red (IIR KNU), Bona Fides (IIR KNU), Legal Dragons (CHNU named after Yuri Fedkovich). To the final, which took place on December 2, 2023, passed the strongest: Minions of Themis and United in spirit! Teams very carefully and diligently prepared for the last "duel." In the end, the team of Minions of Themis won, consisting of captain Masnik Anna, as well as Lazko Taras, Glybchenko Margarita and Vatrich Vladislav.
