Participation of students of the Institute of International Relations in KNU-FAU Summer School 2024

The students of the Institute of International Relations took part in the KNU-FAU Summer School 2024 on "State-Building in a (Post) War Reality", which took place on 22-26 July 2024 in Erlangen and Nuremberg.

The summer school brought together 12 students from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, as well as students from Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and Istanbul Technical University.

Incredible speakers addressed the participants within the framework of the topic:

  • Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Heiner Bielefeldt (FAU): The Political Potential of a Human Rights-Based Democracy;
  • Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kähler (FAU): Ukraine's Monetary and Exchange-Rate Policy During and After the War;
  • Prof. Dr. Vadym Popko (KNU): Global Impact of the Local Self Government Organisations in Post-War Reality;
  • Dr. Yevhen Popko (KNU): The Role of Sport and Sports Law in Peace Building and Post-War Reality;
  • Dr. Mykola Gnatovskyy (Judge of the European Court of Human Rights): The European Court of Human Rights Helping Ukraine to Become a Strong European State;
  • Dr. Pablo Gavira Diaz (International Nuremberg Principles Academy): The Protection of Cultural Property under International Criminal Law;
  • Prof. Dr. Moritz Florin (FAU): Teaching and Researching Ukrainian and Eastern European History in Germany. Before and After the Full-Scale Invasion;
  • Oleksandra Romantsova (Executive Director of the Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine): Significance of Human Rights in Overcoming the Consequences of War;
  • Dr. Kiran Menon (International Nuremberg Principles Academy): Transitional Justice and Nurembergʼs Legacy Within its Framework;
  • Thomas Bauernschmitt (Head of the Broadcasting Studio at FAU): How to Podcast?;
  • Kateryna Rashevska (Legal Expert at the Regional Center for Human Rights, Ukraine): Cognitive De-Occupation and Reintegration of the Freed Territories of Ukraine.

The summer school programme culminated in a visit to the Nuremberg Tribunal Memorial and the recording of original podcasts on the topic of the summer school.

Students of the Institute of International Relations shared their impressions of the KNU-FAU Summer School 2024:

"This event brought together extremely interesting people: Ukrainian and German students of various specialities, doctors and professors, which was the key to informative lectures, interesting discussions and gaining new experience in recording a podcast," recalls Yulia Horbach, a 3rd year student of the International Law programme.

"Thanks to the KNU & FAU Summer School, I met many other students who participated in the project from KNU, as well as foreign colleagues. It was interesting to learn more about the branches of international law, the work of the ECHR, the protection of cultural monuments, etc.", says Daryna Kudrenko, a 4th year student of the International Economic Relations programme.

"The lecture topics revealed international law in a new and extremely interesting way! I am very grateful to the teachers and students who made the summer school truly unforgettable," adds Anna Kryzhanivska, a 3rd year student of the International Law programme. 

"The KNU-FAU Summer School 2024 was an incredibly useful experience for me. I especially remember creating a podcast, which provided me with practical skills that will be useful in the future," says Sofia Shylko, a 3rd year student of International Communications.
