The program subject area “International Economic Relations” in Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was opened in 1972 for the first time in Ukraine. The bachelor program was established under transition of higher education to two-tier system and was further updated according to the interests of students and employers, changes in legislation and growing competition in the educations sector. In particular, the new educational professional program (EPP) was adopted in 2025 on the basis of the previous version of 2020 according to the changes in the List of fields of study and program subject areas in higher education and nowadays fits the program study area C1 “Economics and international economic relations (by specialities)”, specialization С1.02 “International economic relations”. The program is designed in accordance with European educational standards and takes into account the specifics of Ukraine’s economic integration into the global economy.
The EPP is aimed at developing professional competencies in applicants for professional activities in the system of international economic relations and provides for enhanced language training with an emphasis on the language of the profession, the development of economic translation skills and commercial correspondence, which will allow working in international companies and international organizations. At the same time, students gain professional knowledge of two foreign languages (English - the main one, the second - German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese).
The main goal of training bachelors in the specialty C1 "Economics and International Economic Relations", specialization C1.02. - "International Economic Relations" is to form in higher education applicants modern economic thinking based on systemic theoretical knowledge and practical skills with the mandatory study of two foreign languages to solve complex problems in the subject area of economics and international economic relations.
Learning objectives: training specialists who possess modern economic thinking, theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for analyzing and solving complex specialized tasks and problems of professional activity using two foreign languages in the field of international economic relations.
Theoretical content of the subject area: economics of international economic relations at all levels of management with its principles, laws and contradictions of the formation and development of social reproductive processes in their interconnection and interdependence on the basis of the international division of labor, international economic cooperation and taking into account the institutional mechanism of regulation.
Methods, techniques and technologies: general scientific methods of cognition and research activities, mathematical and statistical methods of economic analysis, economic and mathematical modeling, information and communication technologies of research, dissemination and presentation of research results.
Applicants for higher education receive professional knowledge of two foreign languages (English is the main one, the second one is German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese).
The main educational process is provided by two departments: world economy and international economic relations; international finance.
After completing the educational and professional program, students receive the educational qualification of Bachelor of Economics and International Economic Relations and, upon meeting the requirements, can receive the professional qualification of Economist, Translator.
Graduates who have completed their studies in this educational and professional program and obtained a bachelor's degree can continue their studies at the second level of higher education.

The educational process is provided by teachers from the departments of world economy and international economic relations, international finance and other departments of the Institute of International Relations: international business, international relations and foreign policy, international organizations and diplomatic service, international country studies, international law, comparative and European law, international private and customs law, international information, international media communications and communication technologies, foreign languages, professors from the departments of economics, mechanics and mathematics and philosophy of the university. In addition, employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other ministries and departments of Ukraine, employees of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, international organizations, Ukrainian and foreign business structures, foreign tprofessors from leading educational institutions of other countries, etc. are invited to give lecture courses, conduct seminars or practical classes, and master classes.
The professional (pre-diploma) internship in the field is conducted in international and/or Ukrainian companies, allowing students to gain practical experience with interrupting their studies.
Graduates of the educational professional program can work in positions related to the management of international economic relations and hold primary positions: economist, international trade economist, planning economist, financial economist, lending analyst, tax and duties economist, accounting and business analysis economist, pricing economist, econometrician, commodity market research analyst, contract and claims economist, economic consultant, economic observer, member of the executive body of a joint-stock company, member of the board of a joint-stock company, member of the audit commission, member of the supervisory (supervisory) board, junior researcher, lecturer (assistant) of a higher educational institution, economic advisor, attaché, diplomatic agent, foreign language translator, etc.

The main objective of training of international economists is providing students with in-depth knowledge and advanced practical skills in the field of international economic relations, international merchandise and services trade, international movement of capital, labor and intellectual property, international finance, international economic integration. The educational professional program combines international macro- and micro-levels of world economic development, which helps to obtain systemic competences, knowledge and skills related to economic relations in various countries and substantially improves opportunities for employment.
Contemporary economic processes and phenomena; scientific methods of normative, quantitative, and institutional analysis; as well as tools for the development and implementation of international, national, regional, and sectoral economic policy and corporate economics, including international business activities.

The educational professional program «International economic relations» combines theoretical training with a practical orientation and an international focus. Instruction is conducted mainly in Ukrainian through original lecture courses delivered by faculty members, along with seminar and practical sessions involving case analysis, discussions of current economic situations, individual research projects, master classes, trainings and meetings with representatives of international companies, government authorities, and business associations. Several courses are taught in English.
The professional (pre-diploma) internship in the field is conducted in international and/or Ukrainian companies, allowing students to gain practical experience without interrupting their studies. And optionally professional internship “Interpreting activity” (without interrupting their studies).
Graduates of the educational professional program can work in positions related to the management of international economic relations and global economic processes, specifically:
in Ukrainian and foreign companies engaged in foreign economic activity, trade-investment cooperation, and operations on global markets for goods, services, and capital;
in central and local executive authorities, particularly in departments focused on international economic cooperation, European integration, trade, finance, and investment;
in trade-economic representations, chambers of commerce, and representations of international organizations;
in analytical, research, and consulting centers specializing in international economic research, market evaluation, and the development of strategies for entering foreign markets;
in international organizations, technical assistance programs, and international projects;
in research institutions and higher educational institutions, including within the framework of educational and academic careers.

The educational professional program "International Commerce and Investment" was developed in response to the growing global demand for professionals with in-depth knowledge in the field of international trade and investment strategies. The program is designed in accordance with European educational standards and considers the specifics of Ukraine’s economic integration into the global economy. It combines a strong theoretical foundation with practical tools for analysis and participation in international markets.
Part-time studies in the International Economic Relations program were launched in 1997. Over the years, more than 500 students have graduated from the program, including Members of the Parliament of Ukraine as well as professionals from public and private sector enterprises.
The new educational professional program was adopted in 2025 based on the previous version according to the changes in the List of fields of study and program subject areas in higher education and nowadays fits the program study area C1 «Economics and international economic relations (by specialities) », specialization С1.02 «International economic relations».
Training of international economists with in-depth knowledge and advanced practical skills in the field of international economic relations, providing broad opportunities for professional employment both in Ukraine and abroad.
Contemporary economic processes and phenomena; scientific methods of normative, quantitative, and institutional analysis; as well as tools for the development and implementation of international, national, regional, and sectoral economic policy and corporate economics, including international business activities.
The program does not include the study of foreign languages.

At Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, admission to the postgraduate program in International Economic Relations was opened in 1972. Since 1990, the formation of scientific schools has been facilitated by the activities of the Specialized Academic Council for the Defense of Doctoral and Candidate Dissertations in World Economy and International Economic Relations, where not only representatives of Ukraine but also citizens from almost all continents of the world have received the degree of Candidate and Doctor of Sciences. In the period 1990-2021, the Council defended 37 doctoral and more than 230 PhD theses by domestic and foreign applicants from 24 countries. The Philosophy Doctor in International Economic Relations program was launched in 2016. The updated educational research program was approved in 2025 on the basis of the previous version of 2023, taking into account changes in the List of fields of knowledge and specialties in higher education and currently corresponds to the specialty C1 “Economics and International Economic Relations” with the degree of Philosophy Doctor in Economics and International Economic Relations. The program was created in accordance with European educational standards and takes into account the peculiarities of Ukraine's economic integration into the world economy.
Preparation of a highly qualified specialist, integrated into the European and world scientific and educational space, with a doctorate in international relations, specializing in economics and international economic relations, capable of independent research, scientific, organizational and practical activities, as well as scientific and pedagogical activities in higher education institutions
Analysis and assessment of the state and prospects of international economic relations based on a holistic scientific view of the economic unity of the world, effective application of regulatory mechanisms of international economic relations at the national, regional and international levels in the context of modern processes of convergence and divergence, trade wars and military aggressions.
